A chat with… Andrew Parsons
This week we chat with Andrew Parsons, our Senior Partner and Head of Healthcare Providers.
Tell us about your area of work?
Whilst I am the firm’s Senior Partner, this chat focuses on my role as head of our Healthcare Providers group.
We act for health and social care providers across the country including the NHS, independent healthcare providers (especially those providing psychiatric care) care home operators, schools for those with special needs and a wide range of clinics and medical services varying from those supplying mobile operating theatres to radiology services and day care eating disorders services. RLB has a national reputation for this niche area of work.
Our core expertise in this field is advising on the operational legal issues that arise in health and social care. This includes advising on untoward incidents, including deaths, representing clients at inquests, regulatory matters involving the care quality commission, HSE or the police, prosecutions, Court of protection matters, safeguarding, advising on the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act and compensation claims.
Your team has enjoyed much success over the decades, what do you think sets you apart from your competitors?
We provide a specialist, partner-led service providing holistic advice on all aspects of issues when they arise. Clients like our pragmatic, solution-led approach from sector experts who understand and empathise with the challenges that they have.
The pandemic has of course centred around the healthcare sector, what has the experience been like in your role working with clients?
All the same types of work have been relevant during the pandemic. However in addition our health and social care clients have had to struggle with the obvious challenges that the pandemic has brought. Operational matters have put great stress on their services and matters have been immensely complicated by the specific coronavirus legislation and, at times, almost daily new guidance.
Working closely with a known team of lawyers has been very important to clients. The relationships we have developed with them have been crucial to enabling them to succeed in such challenging times.
Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I am a Freeman of the City of London and have claimed my privilege to drive sheep over London Bridge. I am pleased to say they all made it across safely!
